Fishing has always been one of those refreshing outdoor activities that evoke images of tranquility, patience and the thrill of the catch. My first fishing experience was a blend of all these elements, wrapped in a layer of excitement and a touch of the unknown.
The setting
It was a crisp, early morning when I embarked on my fishing journey. Me and my friends took a ride to a nearby lake. The air at the lake was fresh with a scent of earthy aroma. The lake was alive with constant ripples, which indicated that there were many fishes that resided in the lake. The lake seemed to pulse with energy, it was the perfect time to fish.
The preparation
Armed with a borrowed fishing rod and the knowledge freshly given to me by an experienced friend on how to reel the rod, I embarked on my fishing journey. For a beginner, my cast was praised. However, I got a little impatient and started reeling immediately after casting. This of course led to no fishes being caught for awhile.
The waiting game
Foolishly I have been casting without bait which left me flabbergasted because how could I have missed the basic pillar of fishing!? My friend brought chicken liver for bait, but I refused to use it because I despise blood and the smell of it. Instead, I used bread and another method of getting a bite from a fish. It is called a lure. It’s basically a fake fish that you attach to your hook to get bites by imitating a real fish. I like this method because I have to constantly reel in to imitate a fish. It doesn’t make me wait for a bite while doing nothing.
The catch
It took me about 4 hours to catch my first fish and it was the only fish I caught until it was time to go home. This entire trip, I caught only ONE fish. I was so DONE with fishing but had THIRST to catch another fish. On the bright side, it was the biggest fish caught out of everyone in my group. The capture of this fish had only fueled my thirst to catch another fish.
Reflection
This fishing trip was an eye opener to me. I though fishing was just some boring activity people did to catch food, but I was VERY wrong. Catching fish gives you some sort of achievement and its also very cool. Its a very dopamine releasing activity. I plan on going to more fishing trips in the future, if my miserable excuse of a friend group can properly plan an outing. I also dream of doing deep sea fishing in the future and I hope to catch a 300 lbs gouper.

This was the lake I went to. Somewhere in Malaysia, Semenyih.
